Brief History of
Symsonia Baptist Church
Symsonia Baptist Church was officially constituted on Sunday, August 6, 1995. Bro. Headley Thweatt was selected to serve as interim pastor.
The Building Committee members and Pastor Thweatt turned the first shovels of dirt for the new church building at the ground-breaking ceremony October 8, 1995 on nine acres of land previously purchased by Symsonia Baptist Church. This property is located approximately seven tenths of a mile west of the four-way stop on Highway 348 in Symsonia. On Sunday, September 15, we first met for worship in the completed new building. In attendance were 259 people for Sunday school and 369 were counted in the worship hour. The service began with the baptism of six, making the membership 182.
Bro. Johnny Phillips served as interim pastor, then pastor, from May 1997 to January 2000. Later Bro. Frank Queen served as interim pastor until the church called Bro. Rick Miller as pastor. Bro. Rick Miller officially began as pastor on September 23, 2000. He and his wife Martha live in Symsonia.
In the spring of 2000, the church approved plans for a new fellowship hall to be built adjacent to the existing building. The Fellowship Hall was completed December 10, 2000.
August 24, 2003, in a special called business meeting, it was approved to build a new auditorium. The building was started in November 2004. The first service in the new sanctuary was held June 26, 2005. Special guests included former pastors, Bro. Johnny Phillips and Bro. Headley Thweatt.
